Dangerous Diet Pills: Metabolife
Metabolife, introduced in 1997, is a popular dietary supplement that is used to control your appetite in order to lose weight. While the formula no longer contains ephedra, it used to act as the main ingredient in Metabolife. Ephedra is a substance known to cause a variety of difference heart problems, particularly causing the development of primary pulmonary hypertension.
While people turned to Metabolife to help them lose weight, many of them were unaware of the dangers included in the diet drug. Other ingredients in the drug include:
- Guarana
- Ginseng
- Ginger
- Ma huang
Metabolife is meant to work in two ways:
- Appetite suppression
- Thermogenesis (increasing metabolism)
After several years on the market, the Justice Department began an investigation of the dangers associated with ephedra-based diet pills. In an attempt to appear open and honest, Metabolife immediately announced that it had received over 13,000 complaints about their diet drug since it had hit the market in 1997. Of these 13,000 complaints, 80 people had experienced heart problems, seizures, and even death as a result of using the product.
Ephedra was banned in the U.S. after the full extent of the damage was discovered; however, this could not help the people already suffering from the harmful effects of the drug.
