Symptoms of PPH
Primary pulmonary hypertension is a very serious medical condition. It is afflicting more and more people every day, and in many cases could have been avoided. PPH is a difficult condition to live with, and comes with some terrible symptoms.
Some of the most common symptoms of PPH include the following:
- Progressive shortness of breath
- Hyperventilation
- Fatigue
- Progressive weakness
- Fainting spells
- Lightheadedness or dizziness
- Coughing up blood
- Progressive cyanosis
These symptoms may not show up right away in every case. Often, patients with PPH begin to show signs over a period of time. For this reason, a patient known to have PPH must be monitored routinely by a cardiologist or pulmonologist.
Unfortunately, PPH is very difficult to diagnose. In most cases, a doctor will find pulmonary hypertension in the patient and have to rule out a wide range of things before coming to the conclusion of PPH. This means that the doctor will be spending a lot of time testing for anything besides PPH before it can be diagnosed. This makes it very difficult to diagnose.
Far too often, PPH is confused with some other condition or disease. Most often PPH looks like a condition of the heart or lungs. Some of the common misdiagnoses are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema, blood clots in the lungs, or some form of congenital heart disease.
