Tips for PPH Caretakers

Primary pulmonary hypertension is a difficult condition to live with, and not only for the people who have it. Patients in the advanced stages of this illness often require a caretaker, generally a spouse or close relative, to help them manage their health. Unfortunately, many caretakers work so hard for their loved one that they neglect to take care of themselves.

If you are caring for a person with primary pulmonary hypertension, doctors recommend following the following tips. Remember, caretakers need to be in good shape to do their jobs.

  • Maintain relationships and activities outside of your caretaking duties. It is not selfish to spend an evening out of the house from time to time. Even taking a few minutes a day to pursue a hobby or speak to friends can be a big help.
  • Let yourself feel what you feel. Many patients and their caretakers feel pressured to maintain positive attitudes at all times. Although optimism is healthy, it is okay to feel stressed, sad, or angry sometimes.
  • Ask for help when you need it. Emotional and practical support from friends and family can be a huge resource. You may also want to ask your doctor if he or she can refer you to any support groups, reading materials, or other resources.
